According to Rich Miller at Capitol Fax, "Chicago Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL) is the anonymous “Senate Candidate #5″.
According to the AP, Illinois is just shocked by the corruption exposed yesterday. That's laughable - especially since Blagojevich is from Chicago, and married to the daughter of an alderman. But if you read local reports and commentary closely, you'll find that what residents are shocked about is that this guy was was arrogant enough - and amateurish enough - to engage in such flagrantly open corruption during a publicized investigation. (It's not as though our alleged public servants are new at this stuff, you know.) And we are surprised that everyone else is surprised.Jackson Jr. said this morning he was contacted yesterday by federal prosecutors in Chicago who he said “asked me to come in and share with them my insights and thoughts about the selection process.”
Jackson Jr. said “I don’t know” when asked if he was Candidate #5, but said he was told “I am not a target of this investigation.”
Jackson Jr. said he agreed to talk with federal investigators “as quickly as possible” after he consults with a lawyer.
This revelation about Jesse Jr. isn't exactly "stunning", either. It's just the beginning of one more chapter in a very long - and very tiresome - story.
